About This Book

This book was made with help from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH is a place that does health research for the whole country. Doctors and scientists worked with teachers to make this book. They wanted to help kids learn about their mouths and teeth.

Teachers all over the country tried out this book first. They helped make sure it works well in classrooms.

This book comes with a computer disc too. It has videos and fun activities on it.

Teachers can copy pages from this book for their class. They just cannot sell the pages.

About the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

NIH is the biggest medical research center in the world. Its job is to study health problems for the whole country.

NIH tries to learn new things. This helps stop sickness, find sickness, and treat sickness — from small colds to rare diseases.

NIH does this by:

• Doing research in its own labs in Maryland and other places
• Helping other scientists do research too
• Training people to become researchers
• Sharing what they learn with everyone

How NIH Pays for Research

NIH spends its money carefully. Most of the money — about 82 out of 100 dollars — goes to universities, hospitals, and other places that do research.

A smaller part of the money — about 10 out of 100 dollars — goes to research done inside NIH's own labs.
