Chapter 1: Playing Pilgrims

"Christmas will not feel like Christmas," said Jo.
"We have no presents."
Jo said this while lying on the rug.

"It is hard to be poor," said Meg.
She looked down at her old dress.

"Some girls have pretty things," said Amy.
"Other girls have nothing.
That is not fair."
Amy felt a little hurt.

"We have father," said Beth.
"We have mother too.
We have each other."
Beth said this happily.
She sat in her corner.

The fire glowed on the four girls' faces.
For a moment, they all felt happy.

Then Jo spoke again.
"We do not have father now," she said sadly.
"He will be gone a long time."

Jo did not say "maybe forever."
But everyone thought it.
They thought of their father.
He was far away.
